There isn't a great deal written about her, and it seems that her name was actually Eadgifu. She was an extensive landowner with holdings very near some of Harold's lands and she's mentioned in Domesday Book. You can see how my interests in Women's history and Mercian history coincide - Cynethryth being a case in point.Annie Whiteheadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11028691371545306450noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4311063131188554905.post-11847469896788015522021-09-16T08:44:07.354-07:002021-09-16T08:44:07.354-07:00Thanks Sylvia - I agree! :-)Thanks Sylvia - I agree! :-)Annie Whiteheadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11028691371545306450noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4311063131188554905.post-72321592739026832632021-09-16T07:40:45.965-07:002021-09-16T07:40:45.965-07:00Powerful women of the time often seem to have gott...Powerful women of the time often seem to have gotten bad press from the Church. Churchmen liked to adhere to the saint/whore paradigm when it came to powerful women, which often seems to have broken across whether the woman in question listened to the Church and "behaved" or acted independently of Church influence. In particular, I'd take anything Wilfrid said with a grain of salt. As for Cynethryth, her bad reputation coalesced a couple of hundred years after she died. She was the only woman ever to appear on a coin so she was well thought of in her life, and as the wife of Offa, beyond the reach of contemporary detractors. (I'm guessing libel penalties at the time were lethally harsh.) However, Offa's long feud with Jaenberht of Canterbury soured the Church on Mercia, even though Offa was a liberal patron of the Church, endowing many monasteries, etc. Easier to blame his wife for her malign influence than to trash talk the guy who founded St. Alban's monastery. As an aside, thanks for the book on Mercia. I found it very helpful.Charles Barnitzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18006181011170242012noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4311063131188554905.post-65905214541663089482021-09-16T07:39:39.976-07:002021-09-16T07:39:39.976-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Charles Barnitzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18006181011170242012noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4311063131188554905.post-19146426623672770892021-09-16T04:19:40.082-07:002021-09-16T04:19:40.082-07:00I completely agree with Jo Romero.
